The trick is that a fake site is less likely to use https, and your browser (by default) doesn't care. Insecure sites are allowed, and can't be verified, so it looks normal unless you and your browser are actually purposefully relying on the actual security features of https.

HTTP would slip through from time to time as opposed to Blink browsers where it works perfectly all the time. Stay with HTTPS everwhere. I don't use EFF extension myself though, I prefer the Smart HTTPS in Chrome. 1. WebJan 28, 2024 · Sure, not everywhere like the mentioned Smart HTTPS, but preset rules make it faster for the sites it works with and doesn't save exceptions like that one (unexpected behaviour - user wonders why the extension takes so much space, can't clean it from history cleaner menu, by default it saves for incognito too etc.)

Nah, HTTPS Everywhere is the best, and is developed by a trusted source. There's Smart HTTPS, but my understanding is it just tries to convert HTTP to HTTPS, which doesn't work well a lot of the time.
